The beauty of fishing from a houseboat: you are not tied to one fixed spot on the shore. Your boat becomes a floating base – in the morning you drop anchor in a quiet bay and cast straight from the deck, in the afternoon you move on a few lakes and let the evening drift away as the sun sets over the water.
Whether you are a seasoned angler or a complete beginner, the clear, fish-rich lakes of the region have the right spot for every level – and thanks to the tourist scheme you can get on the water without the classic fishing exam.
Fishing without the classic exam – here's how
You don't have to be a qualified angler to cast a line on the Lake District. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania offers the tourist fishing permit: it is valid for one continuous period of 28 days, costs €24 (€23 as a digital document) and can be used from the age of 14 – with no regular fishing exam at all. It lets you fish with a hand rod anywhere in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and a booklet on fishing law and the responsible handling of fish is included.
You can pick up the permit at many tourist information offices, local authorities and spa administrations, or conveniently online at erlaubnis.angeln-mv.de. On top of the fishing document you always need a valid fishing card (fishing permit) for the particular water – you get this from the local issuing points as well.
One more note: the home waters right around Marina Röblinsee lie in Brandenburg, while the small lakes further north belong to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Because the rules differ from one federal state to the next, a quick call to the local tourist information before your first cast is worth it – they will tell you exactly which permit you need for the water you have in mind.

Ziernsee
Known for its rich fish stocks and calm atmosphere. Lovely natural bays to anchor in – this is where you can go after pike, perch and zander.
Menowsee
Connected to Ziernsee and Röblinsee, it offers excellent fishing. Surrounding forests and clear water make it a popular, peaceful destination.
Schwedtsee
A hotspot in the green heart of Fürstenberg/Havel. Varied fish stocks, gently sloping shore zones and picturesque surroundings for relaxed days on the water.
Stolpsee
A wide stretch of water northeast of Fürstenberg. Clear, calm and unspoilt – ideal for a long evening's fishing on board.

Pike
This predator lurks along reed edges and weed beds. Spring and autumn are considered especially exciting times to fish for pike.
Zander
Active at dusk and at night, it prefers deeper, clear areas – and it's a prized fish for supper on board.
Perch
Sociable and often on the move in shoals around structures such as jetties and edges. A rewarding catch for beginners too.
Coarse fish
Roach, bream and the like like to hold close to the shore – perfect for quiet fishing days with the family.
Fishing straight from the houseboat
The biggest advantage over fishing from the shore: with the houseboat you can also reach the still, hard-to-access bays where the fish hold. You anchor wherever you like and fish in peace straight from the deck – no crowds, no rush.
You cruise without a licence: after roughly three hours of instruction at the jetty you receive the charter licence for your travel period. That turns the boat into a mobile fishing spot you move on a little each day – from Röblinsee via Menowsee into the small lakes.
Best time to travel & closed seasons
Fishing on the Lake District runs from spring to autumn. Spring and autumn are especially popular with predator anglers, while summer brings long, quiet evenings on the water. Many species, however, have closed seasons – for example during spawning – when they may not be fished.
Before you head out, check the current closed seasons and minimum sizes for the particular water. They protect the stock and are simply part of responsible angling.
